How Laser Hair Reduction Works
Laser hair reduction at Advanced Skin Care Center and MedSpa is performed by exposing unwanted hair to flashes of intense laser light. A quick puff of coolant is sprayed onto the skin prior to each flash to protect the skin and reduce any discomfort. Some hair will wipe off immediately after the laser hair reduction procedure, but most hair falls out within a few days or weeks. Approximately 60 percent of hairs in the treated area will permanently be disabled by the laser treatment. However, some patients may achieve up to 90 percent reduction of unwanted hair.
Effective hair removal can be performed only when a hair is in its active growth phase. Since roughly 20 to 30 percent of hairs in a particular area are in this active growth phase at one time, several treatment sessions are usually required. Patients generally need at least six treatment sessions, but some undergo additional touchup sessions to achieve the desired results.

What results can I expect from laser hair reduction treatment?
Our state-of-the-art laser hair reduction treatments can provide the best results available today, though results will vary from person to person. All of our hair removal systems are FDA approved for permanent hair reduction. You can expect 60 to 90 percent of the targeted hairs to be permanently disabled by the laser hair reduction procedure. Some hairs in the treated area may grow back after several months or years, and patients may require occasional touchup treatments. Who is a good candidate for laser hair reduction?
Laser hair reduction is an excellent option for men and women of all skin types. Recent advances in laser hair removal technology have allowed for gentle, effective treatment on patients with dark and light skin tones — and treatment is especially effective on thicker, coarser hair.
What is the treatment like?
Our gentle hair reduction treatment uses a series of intense light pulses similar to the flash of a camera. Generally, the area to be treated is shaved a few days before the treatment. On the day of the procedure, a handheld laser is used to target and destroy hair follicles. The treatment creates a mild sensation of heat, but there is little, if any, discomfort. The length of the laser hair reduction procedure varies depending on the area being treated. Patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
Is there any pain or discomfort?
Some patients may feel a mild sting or pinch similar to the snap of a rubber band. Topical numbing cream usually is not required, but it can be used to help ensure a patient’s comfort throughout the treatment.
How many treatments are required?
Laser hair removal usually requires six treatment sessions spaced about four weeks apart. Certain areas of the body such as the back and legs may require more sessions.
How much hair can I expect to lose?
Most patients experience 60 to 90 percent hair reduction in the treated areas. No laser hair reduction system available today can disable 100 percent of hairs treated, and results vary depending on a patient’s hair and skin characteristics.
Is there any "downtime" after the procedure?
Patients can return to work and resume all regular activities almost immediately — there is no downtime after our laser hair reduction treatments. However, patients should avoid exposing the treated area to the sun.
How does laser hair reduction work?
Laser hair reduction works by targeting the root of the hair. The laser’s light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair without any damage to the surrounding skin. The laser energy travels down the hair shaft to the root in the form of heat. When enough heat energy is delivered to the root of the hair, the root is destroyed and the hair falls out.
